Work experience is one of the most powerful ways to introduce young people to the water sector. It brings careers to life, builds confidence, and helps students see how their skills and interests could translate into real-world roles.
WaterCareers.Scot partners offer a variety of work experience opportunities across Scotland, from site visits and shadowing days to week-long placements. These can take place in treatment works, labs, offices, or out in the field - depending on the student’s interests and the organisation’s capacity. Some partners also offer virtual work experience options.
To arrange a placement, schools, colleges, or employability partners should contact the WaterCareers.Scot team or reach out directly to participating employers listed on the site. It’s helpful to include:
- The age group and number of students
- Preferred dates or timeframes
- Any specific interests (e.g. engineering, science, customer service)
- Accessibility or support needs
DJI_20250611105457_0004_W 775 x 410Placements are typically offered to S4–S6 pupils, college students, or adult learners exploring career options. Some employers also offer tailored placements for care-experienced young people or those facing barriers to employment.
We can only offer a limited number of placements each year, and some aspects of our work - particularly in operational or hazardous environments - are off-limits for safety reasons. However, we’ll always do our best to provide meaningful, engaging experiences that reflect the variety of careers in the sector.
Work experience is about more than observation - it’s about connection. Students meet real professionals, ask questions, and get a feel for the culture and purpose of the sector. Many go on to apply for apprenticeships or internships as a result.
If you’re an educator or careers advisor looking to inspire the next generation, work experience in the water sector is a great place to start.
